Quabbin Boat Rentals
DCR rental boats at the three launch areas
DCR rents aluminum fishing boats at all three Quabbin Reservoir boat launch areas during the fishing season: $40 a day for a boat with a motor, $14 for a boat with oars only, half price at 62 and over. Boats are first come, first served, with no reservations. You must be 16 or older and carry a fishing license and fishing tackle, because boats on Quabbin are for fishing only.
The 2026 season ran April 18, 2026 to October 17, 2026, so rentals are closed until the third Saturday in April 2027. Shore fishing continues to December 31; see the fishing guide.
Boat Rentals at a Glance
Where to Rent a Boat
Boats are rented at the three boat launch areas (BLAs). Each one is at a numbered gate on a different side of the reservoir:
- Area 1, Gate 8, William E. Pula Fishing Area, Pelham, off Route 202, 4½ miles north of the intersection with Route 9. DCR calls it prime for trout and salmon.
- Area 2, Gate 31, Robert D. Wetmore Fishing Area, New Salem, off Route 122, just south of the intersection with Route 202.
- Area 3, Gate 43, Stephen M. Brewer Fishing Area, Hardwick, off Greenwich Road, west of Route 32A.
DCR's rental boat availability dashboard shows how many boats are left at each launch area and updates every 15 minutes. DCR is clear that it is a guide, not a promise: a boat that shows as free can be gone by the time you arrive. The dashboard itself says each launch area has 15 motorboats and 2 rowboats.
What You Need to Rent
- Be 16 or older.
- A valid Massachusetts fishing or sporting license, or a one-day Quabbin Fishing License ($5, sold at the launch areas and on the MassWildlife website).
- Fishing tackle. DCR rents only to people who have fishing equipment with them; Quabbin boats are for fishing, not sightseeing.
- A boater safety card if you were born after January 1, 1989 (DCR's 2026 season handout).
- A life jacket for everyone aboard. DCR has a limited number to lend, can't promise one, and refuses the rental if the party is short.
- A credit or debit card: Visa, Mastercard or Discover. No cash and no American Express.
- A completed Quabbin Boat Rental Application (available at the launch areas, in English and Spanish).
The Boats
DCR's rentals are aluminum V-hull boats with built-in flotation, a pull-start outboard of no more than 10 horsepower, and oars. Fuel is included in the rental price. Capacity is set by weight at the attendant's discretion, up to three adults, two adults and two children under 16, or one adult and three children. Anyone under 16 must be with an adult.
Hours and Boats-Off-the-Water Time
Launch areas open at 6 a.m. seven days a week. Closing time moves with daylight: in 2026 it was 8 p.m. in late April and early May, 8:30 p.m. from May 10 to July 25, 8 p.m. into mid-August, 7:30 p.m. to Labor Day weekend, and 6:30 p.m. from September 6 to the season's end. Boats must be back an hour and a half before closing, and no boat may launch within two hours of the posted boats-off-the-water time. Those times are posted at each launch area.
Rentals can be suspended at any time for high wind, storms or other weather. DCR asks people to call the visitor center at (413) 323-7221 before driving out on a day with a wind or storm forecast.
Canoes and Kayaks
You cannot bring your own canoe or kayak to Quabbin; DCR bans private non-motorized boats to keep aquatic invasive species out. In past years DCR rented a few canoes and kayaks for fishing on the regulating ponds above the dams at Areas 2 and 3. There were no canoe or kayak rentals in 2026, because Pottapaug Pond and O'Loughlin Pond were closed to all boating while DCR hand-pulls swollen bladderwort, a floating invasive plant.
Bringing Your Own Motorboat
Private motorboats are allowed only with an intact Quabbin Boat Seal, which you get through DCR's decontamination and inspection program (appointments from March 1 by calling the visitor center). The attendant breaks the seal at launch and reseals the boat to the trailer when you take it out. Boats must be at least 12 feet long, carry no more than four people, and stay within DCR's horsepower limits: half the boat's rated horsepower, capped at 20 hp for two-stroke engines and 25 hp for four-strokes rated 40 hp or more. Pontoon boats, inflatables and sailboats are not allowed. Parking with a trailer is $8 and includes the launch.
Rules on the Water
- Land only at the designated restroom sites marked with white buoys, for no more than 10 minutes, or in an emergency.
- No swimming or wading, no alcohol or cannabis, no dogs, no fires, no drones.
- Stay at least 500 feet from loons, and away from posted Wildlife Research Areas (red buoys).
- Lead sinkers and jigs under 1 ounce are banned in Massachusetts fresh water; recycling bins for line and lead are at each launch area.
DCR says violations of its watershed rules carry fines of up to $50,000 and can cost you your Quabbin fishing privileges. The full list is on rules and regulations.

Boat Rental FAQ
How much does it cost to rent a boat at Quabbin?
$40 a day for a boat and motor (fuel included) or $14 for a boat only, plus $6 parking. Seniors 62 and older and people with a disability placard pay half price.
Can you reserve a boat at Quabbin Reservoir?
No. DCR rents boats first come, first served at the three boat launch areas. Its online availability dashboard updates every 15 minutes but doesn't guarantee a boat.
Do you need a fishing license to rent a boat at Quabbin?
Yes. Renters must be 16 or older and have a Massachusetts fishing or sporting license, or a $5 one-day Quabbin Fishing License, plus fishing tackle.
Can you rent a kayak at Quabbin?
Not in 2026. DCR's canoe and kayak rentals for the regulating ponds were suspended because both ponds were closed to boating to control an invasive plant. Private kayaks are never allowed.
When can you rent boats at Quabbin?
During the Quabbin Fishing Season, from the third Saturday in April to the third Saturday in October. Launch areas open at 6 a.m.; closing time changes through the season.
Does Quabbin take cash for boat rentals?
No. The boat launch areas take credit and debit cards only (Visa, Mastercard, Discover); American Express is not accepted.
